4 Qualify To Fill State House District 14 Seat

Four Republican candidates qualified to fill the seat vacated by Christian Coomer, who was appointed to the state Court of Appeals.

CARTERSVILLE, GA — Four Republican candidates have qualified to run in the Dec. 18 special primary election to fill the Georgia House District 14 seat.

Qualifying ended on Tuesday, Nov. 21, and Ken Coomer, Nickie Leighly, Mitchell Scoggins and Nathan Wilson have all qualified to run for the Republican nomination to replace Christian Coomer, the state representative who resigned from the seat following his appointment by Gov. Nathan Deal to the state Court of Appeals.

The special Republican primary will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 18 in the district, which includes parts of Bartow and Floyd counties. A runoff, if needed, will be held Jan. 15, 2019.

One of the candidates for the race, Ken Coomer, is a senior pastor at Adairsville Church of God and the father of the former state representative. According to the Secretary of State's website, Scoggins listed his occupation as a retired probate court judge while Leighly and Wilson are small business owners.

Bartow County polling places that fall within House District 14 include all of Adairsville, Cassville, Folsom, Kingston, Pine Log and White; and parts of Cartersville East and Center.

Voters who wish to cast ballots by mail in the special primary must obtain a separate absentee ballot application; no ballots will be issued based upon previous requests. The Bartow County Voter Registration and Elections Office said it will begin issuing ballots no later than Friday, Nov. 30, and all ballots must be returned to the Elections office by 7 p.m. Dec. 18.

Advance voting for the primary is scheduled for Dec. 10-14 at two locations: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Voter Registration Office at 1300 Joe Frank Harris Parkway in Cartersville and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Manning Mill Gym at 163B Manning Mill Road in Adairsville. Please note that the Cartersville Civic Center will not be open for advance voting.

Polls in the state house district will open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18. If you do not vote early, you must vote at your established precinct if you reside within the House District 14 boundary. You can visit the SOS My Voter Page to determine if you live within the district.
