Bicyclists Try To Outrun Cops, One Arrested For Meth: Police

Two men riding unlighted bicycles late at night on Joe Frank Harris Parkway tried to outrun the Cartersville cops. They didn't get far.

CARTERSVILLE, GA — Two Cartersville men are in the Bartow jail Wednesday — one charged with meth possession — after trying to outrun city police cars on their bicycles.

It started when Ronny and Ricky Brawner were spotted cycling down Joe Frank Harris Parkway without lights at about 11 p.m. April 29. That drew the attention of two Cartersville police officers who were already on a traffic stop.

And the chase was on.

Following the two to near Atlanta Auto Brokers, one officer turned on the flashing lights of his patrol car. The two kept pedaling anyway.

“I turned my siren on and off four times in an effort to get (Ronny) Brawner to stop,” the officer wrote in his incident report. “However, Mr. Brawner did not stop.” In fact, both Brawners looked back at the pursuing patrol car several times and continued to pedal, according to the incident report.

The two cyclists eventually turned down Leonard Drive, with Ricky “several car lengths” ahead of Ronny, according to the report. Ricky disappeared, and Ronny stopped to talk with officers, who wanted to know where “his friend” went.

It turned out Ricky was hiding in nearby woods with his bicycle. When officers spotted him, he again took off. On his bicycle.

Officers eventually captured Ricky near Joe Frank Harris Parkway and Lipscomb Circle. When they searched him, they found a “loaded syringe with a clear substance inside” on him — which Ricky admitted was methamphetamine, according to the incident report.

Ricky Brawner was charged with possession of methamphetamine, a felony. Ronny was charged with violating probation, also a felony. Both Ricky and Ronny were charged with willful obstruction of law enforcement officers, a misdemeanor.

The Brawners were in the Bartow County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon.
