Boy Rescued From Burning House By Bartow Firefighters, Deputies

CARTERSVILLE, GA — An 11-year-old Bartow County boy is in stable condition Friday after firefighters and sheriff’s deputies worked together to rescue him from a burning house on Gilbreath Road.

First responders arrived at 104 Gilbreath Road at about 5:41 p.m. Thursday to find a single-story wood-frame house on fire and billowing smoke. An off-duty Bartow County Fire & Emergency Services lieutenant was already there, trying to check the fire with a garden hose.

With the help of Bartow County Sheriff’s deputies, Bartow County firefighters entered the burning house and rescued the young boy. Metro EMS then called for a helicopter to airlift the boy to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. According to news release from Bartow County Fire & Emergency Services, the boy was in stable condition Friday morning.

A Bartow County firefighter was injured during the rescue when the facepiece of his breathing apparatus was dislodged, forcing him to inhale smoke and super-heated air. He was taken to Cartersville Medical Center and later to Wellstar Cobb Hospital in Austell for observation. Bartow County Fire Chief Dwayne Jamison told Patch that the firefighter has since been released from the hospital and is "doing well" as of Friday.

“I am extremely proud of the actions of our firefighters and the great teamwork between agencies that resulted in the rescue of this victim,” Jamison said. “Without their quick actions, the outcome of the incident would have been much different.”
