ADAIRSVILLE, GA - The Adairsville Police Department has announced that there will be a memorial service this coming Saturday, April 4, for their police dog that died on Saturday from injuries sustained after being hit by a car.
A remembrance service for Nero, one of the department’s K-9 officers, will be held at 4 p.m. at NorthPointe Church at 30 Orchard Road in Adairsville.
“The City of Adairsville and the Adairsville Police Department want to thank everyone for the incredible show of sympathy and support that the community has demonstrated during this very sad time,” according to a police department release issued on Tuesday morning.

A six-year-old Dutch Shepherd who weighed 65 pounds, Nero had been in the local news late last week when he managed to free himself from his kennel and escape his home in Cedartown, Georgia. He was soon found, however, and reunited with his handler, Cpl. Damon Cadle.
Nero, however, had been hit by a car while on the loose in Polk County and succumbed to his injuries at 3 p.m. on Saturday, according to the department’s Facebook page.

Tuesday’s release went to address ongoing speculation as to how Nero was able to free himself.
“It would be pure speculation to try to determine what Nero was reacting to when he escaped from his kennel,” said the release. “This was a tragic accident.”
