"Stacking of Arms: The Civil War Surrender Ceremonies" Lunch Lecture

A special lecture from Civil War historian Michael K. Shaffer. Lunch will be available for $10.00 plus tax. No outside food or beverages.

General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Lieutenant General U.S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The terms Grant extended served as a template for negotiations with the various Confederate forces continuing to offer resistance. After four years of fighting, the American Civil War - unlike similar conflicts in other nations - ended with the victor focusing on reunification instead of annihilation.
