Atlanta Alumnae Deltas Present Celebration of Women 2015 Awards

Honorees: Antoinette Tuff, Glenda A. Hatchett, Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, Dr. Bernice A. King, and Attorneys Janice & Davida Mathis

Celebration of Women, the annual signature luncheon for the Atlanta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 11:30 A.M. at the Renaissance Concourse Atlanta Airport Hotel, One Hartsfield Centre Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30354. This fundraising affair will benefit scholarship recipients and provide funding for the organization’s Betty Shabazz Academy, the Delta GEMS, and the EMBODI project (for young men). The celebration pays tribute to women who are “Empowered Leaders Impacting the Global Community” and is the platform for the presentation of scholarships and awards.

The Celebration of Women will honor women who have made an impact in the focal points of the sorority’s national programs, including Economic Development, Educational Development, International Involvement and Awareness, Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and Involvement, Social Action, and Arts and Letters. The coveted Fortitude Award will be given to Antoinette Tuff, the shero at Ronald E. McNair Learning Academy whose actions saved the lives of many when she stopped a young man from a inciting a shot-out at the school; Trailblazer Awards go to Judge Glenda A. Hatchett, and Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice. The Delta Chapter Torch Awards will be presented to women who have excelled in leadership roles throughout metropolitan Atlanta and the world beyond including Dr. Elaine Archie-Booker, Pamela D. Cross, Dr. Betty L. Dabney, Shanti Das, Dr. Cari K. Dawson, Dr. Bernice A King, Attorneys Davida and Janice Mathis, Dr. Barbara Morgan, Dr. Priscilla Oliver, and Dr. Beth-Sarah E. Wright.

“90 Years of Celebrating Women in Character, Courage, and Commitment” is the theme for the Celebration of Women 2015 affair which is chaired by Annease Jones and co-chaired by Carolyn Young, and Carolyn Wyatt. “The Atlanta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority continues to provide exceptional programs to our community since chartered in 1924,” said Carol Carter, president of the Chapter. “Our history shows that we have an amazing legacy in the community and our records show that over one-million dollars, in increments of $500 to $5,000, have been given in scholarships over our ninety years of service,” she added. Scholarship awards will be presented to students, both young men and women, who are attending the Atlanta Public Schools.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded in 1913 at Howard University on the principles of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. The Atlanta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the first chapter established in Georgia and the nineteenth chapter in the United States, had its beginning in 1924 when it was chartered as Sigma Chapter. The Atlanta Alumnae Chapter has charted its course by working throughout the community, by speaking out, and by being visible in civic, religious, academic, and political arenas.
