Atlanta, Embattled Apartments Come To Payment Agreement

The city of Atlanta's Department of Watershed Management said Wednesday that it had struck a payment plan with Sierra Ridge apartments.

ATLANTA, GA -- The owners of a troubled apartment complex and Atlanta's Department of Watershed Management have come to a payment agreement, the agency announced Wednesday. The accord allows water service at the Sierra Ridge apartments to remain active.

Sierra Ridge paid the city $133,000 of its past due balance and has vowed to pay the remainder by year’s end, the city said. (SIGN UP: Get Patch's Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts. Or, if you have an iPhone, download the free Patch app.)

In late July, the city charged that the owners of the southwest Atlanta apartment complex had not paid their water bill in more than two years. As a result, the city said that water service would be disconnected for nonpayment, touching off a nasty exchange between the two parties.

In a show of good faith, the extended water service to the apartments after a two-week period of providing tenants with the free utility because of billing issues with the landlord. The gesture was intended to give residents additional time to find alternative housing.
