A Heart Health Fair hosted by Kappa Omega and Tau Epsilon Omega Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was held at Greenbriar Mall in southwest Atlanta on February 10th. The annual event is part of the sorority's national platform of health promotion which targets stroke and heart disease awareness. Working with the sorority's corporate partner, the American Heart Association, the chapters develop a fair which will educate and inform the community on identifying and avoiding behaviors and lifestyles which have a negative impact on its health. The two hours health fair was opened by remarks from the chapters' presidents, Dr. Icey L. Johnson and Ms. Audra Brown Ward, of Kappa Omega and Tau Epsilon Omega respectively. Workshop participants were given a CPR demonstration by Tyler Mallory of Paramount CPR and Fire Safety; attended a health and eating lifestyle discussion led by Candice Bovian; and, revved up their heart rates by doing Zumba and Get Pulsed, led by Kimberly Alexander and Brittany Washington, respectively. Throughout the workshops, participants were treated to healthy snacks and encouraged to integrate this method of snacking into their lifestyles. The health fair ended with closing remarks from the chapters' Health Committee Chairmen, Kandace Carty and Alyce Vyann Howell thanking the participants and encouraging them to embrace the heart healthy information learned there. Sorority members wore "Pink Goes Red" t-shirts to show their recognition of February as the AHA’s Heart month. The sorority is known for its pink and green motif.
