Girls Groups To Attend 'Hidden Figures' Screenings In Metro Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA -- Beginning Thursday, metro Atlanta AMC theaters will begin a second round of screenings for "Hidden Figures," the Oscar-nominated film about three African-American women who helped the United States win the space race.

The powerful impact of the film, which stars starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe, has spurred a grassroots movement to expose as many underprivileged audiences as possible to see the movie.

AMC and 21st Century Fox have partnered to encourage special groups, schools and community organizations to apply to host their own screenings in April.

Two local groups -- Teen Girls in Technology Program at the YWCA of Greater Atlanta and the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta - Red Bud Service Unit -- are among 35 chosen from thousands who applied.

“We at 21CF were inspired by the grassroots movement to bring this film to audiences that wouldn’t otherwise be able to see it—audiences that might include future innovators and barrier-breakers—and we wanted to support and extend that movement,” Liba Rubenstein, 21CF’s Senior Vice President of Social Impact, said in a statement.

It is AMC and 21st Century Fox's hope that the movie continues to build confidence in little girls as well as sparks the careers of future STEM professionals.

"Hidden Figures" was filmed in and around Atlanta starting in March 2016. Since its Christmas Day 2016 release, the film has pulled in more than $220 million and garnered three Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress.
