Michael Johnson Officially Launches Campaign for 5th Congressional Seat
Former Fulton County Superior Court Judge says he's ready to take on the veteran lawmaker.
Former Fulton County Superior Court Judge Michael Johnson officially threw his hat in the ring for Georgia's 5th Congressional seat Thursday, vowing to bring a fresh perspective and bipartisan leadership to the post, if elected.
"I think the citizens are ready to embrace new leadership," Johnson, a Democrat, said during a break from greeting well-wishers at The Cascade Club, 2890 Continental Colony Parkway. "It's a new day. I'm excited."
Johnson, who resigned from the bench June 3 according to a story in The Daily Report, said he plans a "grassroots" campaign with "knocking on doors, making calls and using social media." Top priorities on his platform include job creation, clean water, social security advocacy and education funding.

But Johnson said Thursday that established political figures like Lewis—who announced his plans to run again in April—need strong challengers.
