Nu Lambda Omega AKAs Hosting Two Major Events for the King Weekend

The Nu Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., will honor the legacy of Dr. King by helping others in need with a Sunday Supper and Monday Service Day.

On Sun., Jan, 15, the group will host “America’s Sunday Supper” at the Covenant House Georgia for their “Prepare and Share a Meal” program. 

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to impact the lives of homeless teens,” said Chapter President, Cynthia Parks, in a news release about the events. “We have been blessed with so much and what a way to salute Dr. King’s dream by playing some role in combating poverty by serving hot meals to" the community.

The following day, the group will participate in an environmental stewardship and sustainability community service project.

The Outdoor Activity Center (OAC) is a 26-acre urban forest preserve and nature center located at 1442 Richland Road in near southwest Atlanta. Nu Lambda Omega chapter members, their families and guests will remove invasive plants from the grounds, mulch the trails, repair foot bridges, prepare garden beds for the spring planting season, and clean building’s interior. 

The Sunday Supper and Service Day are two activities that the sorority’s chapters will host around the globe as part of the requirements of the $15,000 signature grant it was awarded from the Points of Light Institute affiliate HandsOn Network, a Corporation for National & Community Service intermediary grantee.The goal of the award is to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; mobilize volunteers to serve; generate civic dialogue; and inspire continued community service.

Globally, more than 20,000 sorority members are expected to make an impact on the community.

“These local projects here in the Atlanta are for everyone. We implore not just the members of Nu Lambda Omega Chapter, but all sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha as well as our family and friends to join us for a day on,” Parks said. “We want the entire community to help us celebrate the significance of this day in our history by making it a national day of service.” 

According to Alpha Kappa Alpha’s international president, Attorney Carolyn House Stewart, the Sorority’s 260,000 members in 975 chapters worldwide have always used the occasion of King’s Birthday to lift up the civil rights hero's memory through service and the grant directly parallels its King Day service mission.

Stewart said that it is fitting that the events coincide with the Sorority’s 104-year anniversary, whose mission is rooted in the same commitment to service that the HandsOn network embraces. The program also parallels the Sorority's programmatic theme: "Global Leadership Through Timeless Service."
