Opening Reception Sunday for Acclaimed Artist Michael D. Harris

A member of the internationally-recognized AfriCOBRA artists' movement, author, painter, history professor Michael D. Harris will meet with art lovers to share his new work entitled "Equal Rites."

The Hammonds House will unveil a new exhibition—"Equal Rites: The Art of Michael D. Harris"—Sunday at the popular Historic West End museum.

The National Black Arts Festival supported opening at the museum, 503 Peeples St., is 2-5 p.m. and it includes an "Artist's Talk and Creative Mix" at 3 p.m. The exhibit is set to run through Sept. 11.

Harris is author of Colored Pictures: Race and Visual Representation (2003). According to Harris' website, he also has contributed to or co-authored a number of publications andhas had articles on contemporary African art and African-American art published in a number of books and journals.

Harris has been a member of the artist collective, AfriCOBRA since 1979, and has shown his work all over the United States, in the Caribbean, and in Europe.

His work is represented in the collections of Morehouse College, Howard University, the University of North Carolina, the City of Atlanta, the Hampton University Museum, Dillard University, the David Driskell Center at the University of Maryland, College Park, and the Atlanta airport, and in many private collections.
