Urban League Of Greater Atlanta Young Professional Awards

2020 DREAM CATCHERS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED

URBAN LEAGUE OF GREATER ATLANTA YOUNG PROFESSIONALS ANNOUNCES 2020 DREAM CATCHERS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
The Urban League of Greater Atlanta Young Professionals (ULGA-YP) today announced the winners of its 2020 Dream Catchers Scholarship, which provides Atlanta-area students with a $5,000 scholarship to continue their post-secondary education. The following students have distinguished themselves with academic excellence, demonstrated leadership, service to community and a commitment to a future of success:
• A'Lyah Releford – Freshman at Agnes Scott College • Yusef Abdul- Hakim – Sophomore at Georgia Tech University • Mareese Bolton – Freshman at Tuskegee University • Zahara-London Smith – Freshman at Southern University of Baton Rouge
Since 2010, ULGA-YP has awarded more than $100,000 through the Dream Catchers Scholarship Fund to help Atlanta youth attend college. The scholarship seeks to support equal access to higher education by reducing the financial barriers many in the community face when making decisions about their future.

"We are excited and proud to continue our tradition of granting scholarships to the young men and women of Project Ready who have amazed us with their talent and determination,” said ULGA-YP President Michael Twum. “We could not have done this without the support of our members, partners and sponsors. Each of you has contributed to the largest scholarship to date. To our awardees, we are proud of you and are looking forward to what the future holds for you."

All scholarship recipients are current participants of the Urban League’s Project Ready, a community program focused on preparing African Americans and other historically underserved youth, grades 8-12, for college and careers. The program sponsors targeted events, activities, and mentorship to aid in the students’ personal and professional development.

“I have worked hard all year in order to receive this [scholarship],” said Zahara-London Smith, a freshman at Southern University of Baton Rouge and first-generation college student who aspires to become a dental surgeon. “It is important for me to tell my story as it has been the driving force for my success so far.”
