7 Picked As Finalists For 2019 Forsyth Teacher Of Year

The nominees for the Forsyth County Schools' Teacher of the Year include educators from the county's elementary, middle and high schools.

CUMMING, GA — The Forsyth County Schools (FCS) this week announced seven finalists for 2019 Teacher of the Year, including three from elementary schools, two from middle schools and another pair from county high schools. The finalists include:

Rhonda Slaughter, a first-grade teacher at Matt Elementary School. She began her teaching career in Florida in 2004 and came to Matt Elementary School in 2015.

Jackie Shirley, a special needs pre-K teacher at Silver City Elementary School. Her teaching career began at Cumming Elementary School in 2007, and she has taught at Little Mill Middle School and Coal Mountain Elementary School.

Jessica Nicholson, a fifth-grade teacher at Whitlow Elementary School. Her teaching career began in Liberty County, Ga., in 2003, and in 2016, she joined the FCS family at Whitlow Elementary School.

Donna Jackson teaches social studies at North Forsyth Middle School. She joined the FCS family in 1993 and has taught at Otwell Middle School, Forsyth Central High School, Riverwatch Middle School and North Forsyth Middle School.

Kim Schreier teaches math at South Forsyth Middle School. In 2007, she began teaching in Fulton County, then came to South Forsyth Middle School in 2014.

Amy Dykes is a science teacher at North Forsyth High School. She began her teaching career in South Georgia in 2000 and joined North Forsyth High in 2002.

Julie Hunt is an English teacher at South Forsyth High School. She started teaching in 1998 in Florida and joined the FCS family at South Forsyth High in 2014.

The seven finalists will go before a committee, made up of community leaders and educators, to be interviewed and give a speech, the Forsyth County News reported Thursday. The top teacher of 2019 will be announced on March 8 at the annual Celebration of Excellence luncheon.
