Amazingly enough, it’s almost back-to-school time, which means families looking to get their children into a new school district before the first day of class are in a bit of a time crunch. With millennials and young families taking up a large portion of the real estate market, it should come as no surprise that industry surveys show that school district boundaries play into the buying decisions of more than 60 percent of home buyers.
Therefore, if you’re in the market for a new home and are looking for an area which includes both great schools and great neighborhoods, take a moment to consider the following tips.

KNOW YOUR FAMILY. While your children’s (or future children’s) education is clearly important, purchasing a home is a large financial decision that involves a myriad of factors. Make sure you’re taking your family’s needs into account, as well as the school district. For example, is your household still growing? What is the most important factor in your final decision? Square footage? A fenced yard? Consider making a list of what you hope to see in and around your new home and go from there.
LOCATE THE BEST SCHOOLS. While this step should be a bit of a no-brainer, if one of your main priorities is to be near your school of choice, try not to get sidetracked by homes in areas outside district boundaries. Sure, there may be a beautiful 5-bedroom with high ceilings and a backyard pool one city to the west, but it’s important to keep your eye on the ball if school district is your main focus.

REVIEW SCHOOL INFORMATION. Although so-and-so school may have a reputation for being the best, take some time to review it before you make the final decision on purchasing a home nearby. Perhaps it has a fantastic academic record but is lacking in other areas that are important to your children such as art, music, or athletics. Again, it’s all about what is best for your family.
MAKE A LIST OF QUESTIONS FOR YOUR REALTOR. Utilizing the services of a knowledgeable Realtor is important because they can help you weigh the pros and cons of purchasing a home within certain areas. While there are clearly some things that will matter to your family, make a point to ask questions about how your decision will affect your home’s future value. A great Realtor should be able to help you find the right home, in the right location, and near the right schools.
