You might have heard of Pi Day, but can you explain the mathematical concept?
Pi is an “irrational number” used to express the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The distinction of irrational means that the number has a decimal with no end or repeating number.
Typing the symbol for Pi into a calculator and pressing enter will give you the result of 3.141592654, not because this value is exact but because the calculator’s screen is limited to 10 digits.
Pi Day as a holiday wasn’t made official until 2009, when the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution designating March 14 as “National Pi Day” to encourage schools to observe the day with a special focus on math.
People commonly celebrate the holiday with pie eating contests and seeing how many digits of the number they can recite from memory.
