Pinecrest Middle School Students Plant First Garden

Months of planning, fund raising and receipt of generous donations proved fruitful in making project a reality

Middle School students at Pinecrest Academy were excited to plant their very first garden in late April 2016. A proposal by student Margot Murphy during the 2014-2015 school year inspired the Student Government to plan for a garden this year.

After much planning, fund raising and receipt of generous donations, the garden has become a reality. Numerous students, their parents, and faculty members toiled to bring the project to fruition this spring.

The garden, which was created outside of the school’s Middle School building, is made up of a salsa garden (tomatoes, peppers, cilantro) and an Italian garden (tomatoes, basil, oregano). Students are hoping for a crop when the 2016-2017 school year begins.

The first harvest from the garden, which will be a 7th grade project next year, will be distributed to the classes who take care of it.

Students participated in a blessing of the new garden on May 6 by Fr. David Barton, LC, and look forward to tending it and watching it flourish over the years.
