Preliminary Widening Work To Begin At Ga. 369, 400 Interchange

CUMMING, GA — Over the next few months, residents will begin seeing activity at the intersection of Ga. 369 and Ga. 400 as preliminary work begins on widening of Ga. 369 and new interchange construction. This will include clearing the area, along with the removal of underground storage tanks.

The transportation project to widen Ga. 369 and create a new interchange with Ga. 400 is scheduled to be sent out for bid in the fall of 2019. The county anticipates awarding the bid in early 2020. Funding for this project comes from the Forsyth County Transportation Bond approved by voters in 2014, along with funding from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The project includes widening Ga. 369 from an existing two-lane roadway from just west of Ga. 9 to slightly east of Ga. 306, approximately 2 miles. The project will also upgrade the existing at-grade signalized intersection of Ga. 400 and Ga. 369 to a grade-separated, partial cloverleaf interchange. Public input meetings regarding this project were held in December 2016.

“The widening and partial cloverleaf interchange required the county to obtain rights-of-way on properties within the project corridor,” said Forsyth County Engineering Director John Cunard. “This process was initiated in late 2017. The county contacted all property owners and negotiated with them in good faith to obtain the necessary right-of-way.”

Most properties where the county needed to acquire right-of-way were portions of parcels adjacent to the existing right-of-way, where there were no existing structures or infrastructure. There were four properties (one residential and three commercial) where right-of-way acquisition included an impact to existing structures and/or infrastructure.

The residential property owner was initially contacted in October 2018, with right-of-way obtained on Feb. 20. The two commercial property owners within the interchange were contacted in November 2017 and February 2018 and were provided with a vacate date of June 25.

Where requested and feasible, the tenants of these commercial properties were granted extensions to July 15. The County is in the process of closing with the single commercial tenant outside of the interchange area.
