ABOUT 1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is an initiative of the Georgia Public Library Service (GPLS) in support of a nationwide effort to encourage parents of newborns, infants, toddlers, and preschoolers to make reading aloud a daily priority.
Each year, “more than 1 in 3 children enter kindergarten without the language skills they need to learn to read,” according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Reading aloud with children ages 0 to 5 supports early literacy and pre-reading skills, fosters a love of books and learning, and strengthens bonding between the child and parents or caregivers.
