Gwinnett's Taylor Alexander Is Out on 'The Voice'

Alexander had a tall task taking on vocalist Jesse Larson, but represented himself well during a duet of Garth Brooks' "Shameless."

FLOWERY BRANCH, GA — Gwinnett County native Taylor Alexander went out on a high note Tuesday night, putting in a praiseworthy performance but, ultimately, falling short in the battle round on "The Voice."

Coach Adam Levine picked vocal super-talent Jesse Larson to move on to the next round on the NBC show, after he and Alexander teamed up on a version of Garth Brooks' "Shameless."

Unfortunately for Alexander, who grew up in Buford and Flowery Branch and now makes his home in Nashville, Levine was the only coach with a "steal" remaining after the pairing, meaning none of the other coaches had an opportunity to scoop him up for their own teams.

"Great performance by both of you," said coach Blake Shelton. "I think Taylor probably had more work cut out for him but, man, way to step up to the plate ... ."

Shelton said if he were Levine he would "stick with my country guy" and choose Alexander as winner of the battle.

In making his decision, Levine, the frontman for Maroon 5, celebrated the fact that he was the only judge to pick both Alexander and Larson during blind auditions.

"You were both one-chair turns and I take a certain amount of pride in that because I believe I see something in you that no one else saw, so I never want that to end," he said.

He said Alexander "did an incredible job," performing the tune his own style instead of trying to go note-for-note against Larson's vocal chops.

Alexander, 25, is a traditional country performer who has been living and performing in Nashville for the past three years. According to Rolling Stone, he grew up listening to country music, but turned to punk rock in his teen years before beginning to blend styles with his own tunes.

During blind auditions, he wowed judges and got Levine to turn his chair with a country take on Cher's "Believe."
