Acworth Man ID'd As Pilot Of Small Plane That Crashed In Alabama

William McClain was just a few days away from his 77th birthday. He had planned to celebrate it by flying to meet his younger brother.

ACWORTH — An Acworth man just days away from his 77th birthday has been identified as the pilot of a plane that crashed in eastern Alabama.

William Elliot McClain was the only person aboard his small plane, found over the weekend in a wooded area behind a residence in Boaz, Alabama, about 50 miles southeast of Huntsville.

McClain’s Zenith CH750 disappeared from radar Thursday as he approached Tupelo, Mississippi and then turned back to Georgia.

According to The Gadsden Times, McClain’s aircraft had been on a test flight between Georgia and Mississippi before a flight to Arkansas, where McClain planned to celebrate a shared birthday with his younger brother Gary.

Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton said in a news release that there was no indication of “foul play and the incident appears to be a tragic accident.”
