College Football Playoffs: UGA Will Play Oklahoma In Rose Bowl

The Georgia Bulldogs were ranked No. 3 by the selection committee and will play the championship semifinal on New Year's Day.

ATLANTA, GA — The Georgia Bulldogs are Rose Bowl bound. A day after winning the SEC Championship, UGA was ranked No. 3 by the College Football Playoff committee, setting up a semifinal matchup with second-ranked Oklahoma in the classic bowl game.

The winner of that Jan. 1 matchup will go to the Jan. 8 National Championship Game, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

In the other bracket, No. 1 Clemson and No. 4 Alabama will meet for a semifinal game in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, also on New Year's Day.

With their 28-7 win over Auburn, the 12-1 Bulldogs had been nearly certain of a spot in the final four. Georgia was ranked No. 6 going into the game in Atlanta and Auburn, who had beaten UGA 40-17 just three weeks earlier, was ranked No. 2.

ACC champions Clemson trounced Miami in Saturday's conference championship, while Big 12 champions Oklahoma cruised to a 41-17 win over Texas Christian University.

The last spot in the playoff was considered a bit of a a toss-up, with 11-1 Alabama and Big 10 champions Ohio State considered the most likely candidates.

The Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 in Pasadena, California. Kickoff for that game will be at 5:10 p.m. ET and it will be televised nationally on ESPN.

No. 1 and No. 4 will play their semi-final in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans — also on New Year's Day at 8:45 p.m.
