Dallas Man Ends SWAT Standoff By Stabbing Self: Sheriff's Office

What started as a domestic dispute Wednesday escalated into a hostage situation and eventually a SWAT standoff, authorities said.

PAULDING COUNTY, GA — Authorities say a Dallas, Georgia, man apparently stabbed himself Wednesday, ending a SWAT standoff that began after a domestic dispute escalated into a hostage situation.

Once he’s released from the hospital, Brandon Andrew Sherfield, 31, will face multiple charges connected both to taking a hostage and to the fight that led him to do it in the first place, said Sgt. Ashley Henson of the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office.

Paulding deputies arrived at 991 High Shoals Road Wednesday afternoon to what they were told was a hostage situation with Sherfield “holding the female against her will with a gun,” Henson said. Soon thereafter, the female “frantically exited” the house and told deputies that Sherfield “had just stabbed himself.” As the woman left the home, Henson said, deputies heard a man scream from inside.

Once SWAT negotiators were able to lure Sherfield into view, they could see “what appeared to be some very serious self-inflicted lacerations to his abdomen,” Henson said. Sherfield was taken to a local hospital without further incident for treatment.

Paulding detectives are encouraging anyone with information on this incident to call them anonymously at 770-443-3047 or send a message via the Paulding Sheriff mobile app.
