GA Coronavirus Positives, Deaths Continue To Climb

Statistics released Wednesday by Georgia's health department showed more than 1,700 newly confirmed cases for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.

ATLANTA, GA — The number of positive tests for COVID-19 in Georgia is continuing to trend in the wrong direction.

Statistics released Wednesday by Georgia’s health department showed more than 1,700 newly confirmed cases for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. On Tuesday, more than 1,600 newly confirmed cases were reported.

The state's seven-day moving average for positives — that is, the average of positives from the last week, which more accurately represents a trend — also continues to rise. At 1,653.3, it’s the highest it’s been since Sept. 21.

The number of deaths from COVID-19 reported in a single day, 34, is also up, although it’s not rising as quickly. Death counts typically lag somewhat behind an increase in positive tests for the coronavirus.

The Georgia Department of Public Health in Atlanta reported a total of 355,025 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. According to the health department’s website, that includes 1,734 newly confirmed cases over the last 24 hours.

Georgia also reported 7,876 deaths so far from COVID-19, with 34 more deaths recorded in the last 24 hours. In addition, the state reported 31,370 hospitalizations — 114 more than the day before — and 5,888 admissions so far to intensive-care units.

No information is available from Georgia about how many patients have recovered.

Counties in or near metro Atlanta and other metropolitan areas continue to have the highest number of positives, with Fulton County still in the lead.

  8. Richmond County: 7,964 — 23 new
  9. Cherokee County: 7,161 — 79 new
  10. Bibb County: 6,618 — 14 new

Globally, nearly 44.3 million people have tested positive for COVID-19, and more than 1.1 million people have died from it, Johns Hopkins University reported Wednesday.

In the United States, more than 8.8 million people have been infected and more than 227,000 people have died from COVID-19 as of Wednesday. The U.S. has only about 4 percent of the world's population but more confirmed cases and deaths than any other country.
