Last Surviving Crew Member of the Enola Gay Dies in Ga.

"Dutch" Van Kirk, 93, was navigator on plane that dropped atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

The last surviving member of the crew that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, in World War II has died, multiple outlets have reported.

Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk, 93, died Monday of natural causes at a retirement home in Stone Mountain, his son confirmed with the Associated Press.

Kirk was the navigator of the Enola Gay, the B-29 that was the first aircraft to drop an atomic bomb, on Aug. 6, 1945.

Van Kirk was 24 at the time.

In a 2010 interview with 11Alive, Van Kirk said he didn’t regret his role in the bombing, saying it ended up saving lives by ending the war.

The AP report said a funeral is planned for Aug. 5 in Pennsylvania.
