GEORGIA — Now that former President Donald Trump has been banned from Twitter, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has stepped into that void as one of the GOP’s loudest antagonistic voices.

On Sunday night, Greene trolled fellow Congresswoman Cori Bush as a racist for saying “Black people still aren’t free.”

“Says a black woman, who is one of only 435 people in all of America currently elected to serve in Congress” Greene tweeted. “You can stop with the racism now Cori and put your race card back in your pocket. 4th of July is freedom for all from a tyrannical government.”

In her initial tweet, Bush wrote: “When they say that the 4th of July is about American freedom, remember this: the freedom they’re referring to is for white people. This land is stolen land and Black people still aren’t free.”

This isn’t the first time Greene and Bush have crossed swords. In January, Bush, a Missouri Democrat, moved her office away from Greene out of concern for her “team’s safety.” According to Bush, Greene and her staff began “berating” her after she repeatedly demanded Greene wear a mask, with one staffer yelling “Stop inciting violence with Black Lives Matter.”

'No one cares about the Delta variant'

On Monday, Greene picked up the same thread and tweeted “No one cares about the Delta variant or any other variant.

“They are over covid & there is no amount of fear based screaming from the media that will ever force Americans to shut down again,” Greene wrote. It was part of a thread of 15 separate tweets Greene posted, containing familiar GOP talking points and billed as a "message from America to the Swamp."

While Georgia has been relatively unaffected by the Delta variant so far, Missouri — a state with a lower vaccination rate — has begun seeing a spike in COVID-19 patients, almost all with the Delta variant and most unvaccinated, according to The Wall Street Journal. In Springfield, Missouri, for example, one hospital saw 90 COVID-19 patients on a recent day, up from 10 just seven weeks ago. The Journal reports the hospital’s COVID-19 caseload had peaked late last year at about 120 patients.

“For Georgia, delta makes up just 6% of the variants of concern, and 36.7% of the state’s population is fully vaccinated,” writes Amber Schmidtke, a Mercer University professor and immunology expert who posts regularly on the pandemic.“Missouri has a higher vaccination rate (39.2%) than Georgia. If delta gets going in Georgia, we could anticipate a similar surge as what Missouri is experiencing.”

Greene has also sponsored a bill to essentially fire presidential advisor and immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci by zeroing out his salary as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The Fire Fauci Act already has attracted 12 Republican co-sponsors, including Reps. Matt Gaetz and Louie Gohmert.

As of Tuesday, nearly 4 million people worldwide have died of COVID-19, with almost 606,000 of them in the United States alone. More than 20,000 people in Georgia have died of COVID-19.
