ATLANTA, GA — Will Georgia and Georgia Tech play their annual football game this year for state bragging rights?

The answer is a definite maybe.

Even though the Big 10 and Pac-12 conferences decided last week to play only in-conference this year, the SEC and ACC — homes to the Bulldogs and Yellowjackets, respectively — are still keeping their options open.

"In the coming weeks we will continue to meet regularly with campus leaders via videoconferences and gather relevant information while guided by medical advisors," SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said Monday, as reported by The Sporting News. "We believe that late July will provide the best clarity for making the important decisions ahead of us."

SEC athletic directors met Monday in Birmingham, Alabama, to discuss plans ahead of 2020’s coronavirus-compromised season.

Meanwhile, on June 10 ACC commissioner John Swofford issued a similar statement, punting the decision to later this month.

“Over the last few months, our conference has prepared numerous scenarios related to the fall athletics season,” Swofford said in a statement posted to the conference’s website. “The league membership and our medical advisory group will make every effort to be as prepared as possible during these unprecedented times, and we anticipate a decision by our Board of Directors in late July.”

If the Bulldogs and Yellowjackets do play this year, it will be on Nov. 28 in Athens.
