Stolen Dune Buggy Lands Rockmart Man Behind Bars

PAULDING COUNTY, GA — A Rockmart man is behind bars after trying to sell what police say is a stolen dune buggy on Facebook.

Lenny Scott Moody, 61, is charged with theft by receiving stolen property and felony probation violation. He was also charged with possession of methamphetamine after detectives spotted a small amount of what they believed was meth in plain view while at his residence, according to The Marietta Daily Journal.

The dune buggy’s original owner — who’d had it stolen from his Polk County residence in January — contacted the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office on June 29 after spotting the vehicle on Facebook Marketplace and then arranging to meet the seller.

The victim told Paulding detectives that a female at 1789 Crossroads Church Road in Rockmart offered to show him the dune buggy for the man who claimed to be its owner. Although the dune buggy had been painted blue and had a different gear-shifter knob, the victim said he could identify it based on specific modifications he had made to it.

Soon thereafter, Paulding County detectives and probation officers arrived at the house to meet Moody, who claimed to own the dune buggy.

Moody told authorities he’d bought the dune buggy from someone who couldn’t be located at a price far below market value. Moody also showed detectives a handwritten bill of sale that he said was from the same person.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Moody was not arrested until July 23.

Moody is currently in the Paulding County Detention Center without bond.
