Strong Storms and High Winds Possible Thursday: Georgia Weather

Metro Atlanta could see rain all day Thursday, with increasing chances of severe storms in the afternoon and evening.

ATLANTA, GA — Metro Atlanta is in for a rainy day Thursday, with the possibility of severe thunderstorms increasing throughout the afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook and wind advisory for much of north and central Georgia. The outlook calls for "isolated strong to possibly severe storms" throughout the region.

According to the NWS, showers and thunderstorms will become increasingly more frequent throughout Georgia during the day. Storms are expected to become severe over central Georgia during the morning, then spread throughout the rest of the area later in the day.

The main threats from the storms will be strong, gusty winds and frequent lightning, the weather service says.

The wind advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday for north Georgia.

Winds are forecast to be blowing 15-25 m.p.h., with gusts up to 40 m.p.h., or 45 m.p.h. in the higher elevations of the north Georgia mountains.

Strong winds will bring down large tree limbs and some weaker trees, especially with soil saturated from the rain, the NWS said. Unsecured items left outdoors could be blown around and driving may be difficult.

Thursday's forecast from the National Weather Service calls for showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 3 p.m., then showers and a chance of another storm after 3 p.m. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.

Thursday night brings continued showers and a chance of a thunderstorm before 9 p.m., then a chance of more storms through 1 a.m., when the likelihood of storms will subside. Chance of precipitation Thursday night in metro Atlanta is 60 percent.

The extended forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of showers on Friday, when it will be cloudy with a high near 60 degrees. Southwest winds will be around 15 m.p.h., with gusts as high as 20 m.p.h. Friday night will have a 30 percent chance of showers before 2 a.m.

The current forecast for this weekend calls for sunny skies Saturday and Sunday.
