$1.3M Douglas County Courthouse Renovation Project To Begin

DOUGLASVILLE, GA - Construction at the Douglas County Courthouse is scheduled to begin in just a few days. Starting Monday, Feb. 25, Douglas County government will temporarily close the front entrances to both employees and the public as part of an extensive renovation project that is expected to last approximately six months.

During this time entry and exit to the courthouse will only be available through the “Truth” and “Liberty” side entrances. Exiting through the front entrances will only be allowed during an emergency. Douglas County Government will temporarily add additional handicap parking and marked accordingly at both the “Truth” and “Liberty” side entrances.

“The Douglas County Board of Commissioners continues to work with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to improve security measures at the Courthouse,” County spokesman Rick Martin said. “This project intends to enhance the security of anyone who visits the courthouse to conduct business or pleasure with our various community events.”

Cost of the renovation project is estimated to be $1.3 million. Renovation of this magnitude has never occurred since the construction of the Courthouse. “The project includes renovation of the space previously occupied by the Tax Commissioner, which will ultimately be occupied by the Public Defender,” Martin said. “Part of the renovation also includes expansion of the secured parking at the rear of the building with the addition of parking spaces, gated entry, and a privacy fence.”

Visitors to the Courthouse could see contractors mobilizing equipment and preparations taking place as early as Monday, February 18, 2019. “We understand these changes may inconvenience some, but we are hopeful in advance that people will understand," Martin said.
