Douglasville, Ga - Boundary Waters is about to get two new gymnasiums, a conference room and workout facility.
The Douglas County Board of Commissioners has approved a contract with RaLin and Associates for the construction of the $7 million Boundary Waters Multipurpose Recreational Center, according to the Douglas County Sentinel.
The 35,000 square-foot building will be next to the aquatic center on Ga. 92 in the northern part of the county. There will be two gymnasiums, a conference room, a small fitness center and an elevated running track circling both gyms.
The complex will be paid for with special local option sales tax or SPLOST monies, according to the Sentinel. The project, to begin in early 2020 is expected to also be completed next year.
The Boundary Waters Aquatic Center features an 8-lane, 25-meter heated competition pool, and a 4-lane, heated therapeutic/teaching pool. The aquatic center was also designed and constructed with SPLOST funds.
The aquatic center is adjacent to Boundary Waters Park, a 492-acre area that hosts a multitude of recreational activities for children and adults. Boundary Waters Park officially opened to scheduled recreational activities in the spring of 2007 when the first youth baseball league season was played. The park includes an 8-field baseball complex, two regulation sized soccer fields, and a regulation sized football field.
Additional amenities include a children's playground, ten-acre fishing pond, 12 plus miles of multi-use trials for equestrian, running, mountain biking, and hiking, and 2, 18-hole Disc Golf Courses.
Boundary Waters Park also features the Douglas County segment of the Chattahoochee Hill Country Regional Greenway Trail which was completed in May of 2013. This is a stretch of paved trail that connects to the current "natural" trail segment of Boundary Waters and once completed, will connect with Sweetwater Creek State Park, the cities/counties of Carroll, Coweta, Fulton, and the City of Chattahoochee Hills to complete a 98 mile greenway corridor.
