Dogs Now Allowed At Douglasville City Parks

The Mayor and City Council recently approved a change to their Animals Ordinance that will allow dog owners to bring their K-9 companions to city parks.

“I am thrilled that we are now allowing dogs in our parks,” Mayor Rochelle Robinson said. “I hear from residents so often that we need dog parks in the city. We now have multiple parks where they can bring their furry family members to play.”

Dogs will not be allowed to roam free, however. According to the updated ordinance, dogs must always be leashed and cannot be within 30 feet of athletic fields, playground equipment, or swimming pools. The ordinance also stipulates that dog handlers must be at least 16 years old and cannot handle more than two dogs at one time. Finally, it is also up to the dog’s handler to clean up after and properly dispose of the dog’s waste.

“The safety of park-goers and their animals is our main concern,” Parks and Recreation Director, Travis Landrum, explained. “We’re excited to add this amenity to our parks, since dog parks are in such high demand. It’s a great start and we hope to bring a free-roam dog park in the future.”
