Douglas County Libraries Back In Business With Curbside Pickup

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — If you’ve been homebound and have already devoured every book in the house — twice — you now have reason to rejoice: Douglas County reopened its libraries Monday for “touchless” curbside service.

The first day back in business was “very steady,” according to Douglas County Librarian Lindy Moore.

Here’s how it works: Call your nearest library first with a list of up to 10 books, audio books or DVDs. A library employee will pull what he or she can, then call you back with the results. You then drive to your library and call from the parking lot, and an employee will bring your books to an outside table for pickup.

The system’s catalog of available books is online, either at the PINES website or at the website for the library’s umbrella organization, the West Georgia Regional Library System. Books shown online are usually available, but there might be “that certain book by Dr. Seuss we couldn’t find,” said library assistant Gloria Reed, so be sure to select some alternates. “There’s always the off chance that something might be misshelved,” she said.

No library card? No problem. If you don’t already have a card, you can ask for an application on the spot. Just be sure to bring proper ID such as a driver’s license.

For now, each of Douglas County’s three libraries are open only Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Moore said she expects Douglas County to open its facilities for walk-in business at the end of May, but no date has been set.

“You can only read so many e-books,” Moore said. “It’s nice to have that book in your hands.”
