Douglasville to Host Cancer Study Kickoff Event

The event begins at 7 a.m. Wednesday at the Douglasville Police Department.

The American Cancer Society will be in Douglasville Wednesday to kickoff a study it hopes will eliminate cancer as a major health problem.

The "Cancer Prevention Study-3" kickoff event begins at 7 a.m. at the Douglasville Police Department with registration and breakfast, according to a post on the Douglasville Police Department's Facebook page.

A one-hour program is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m.

"This is our chance to educate those around us about CPS-3 as well as a time for us to get more information," according to the Facebook post.

The American Society hopes the study will help it "better understand the lifestyle, behavioral, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer."

To qualify for the study, participants between the ages of 30 and 65 must commit to completing periodic follow up surveys at home for the next 20 to 30 years. Those who have been diagnosed with cancer are ineligible for the study.

After Wednesday's kickoff event, the American Cancer Society will return to Douglasville in September to enroll participants in the study.

Enrollment will take place at:

  • WellStar Paulding Hospital Medical Office Building: 7:30 to 11 a.m. Sept. 10;
  • WellStar Douglas Hospital Sweetwater Room: 7:30 to 11 a.m. Sept. 12; and
  • Douglasville Police Department Community Room: 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19
