High Schools In Douglas County Named 2019 AP Honor Schools

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA — Superintendent Trent North announced recently that all high schools in Douglas County received recognition on one or more of the lists of 2019 AP Honor Schools announced by State School Superintendent Richard Woods, Feb. 8. The honors reflect achievement and/or participation on the AP, or Advanced Placement, tests administered by the College Board during spring of 2018.

2019 AP STEM Schools (200 schools named out of 482 public high schools in Georgia)

All five high schools in Douglas County – Alexander, Chapel Hill, Douglas County, Lithia Springs, and New Manchester – were named AP STEM Schools, an honor given to schools having students who tested in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses.

2019 AP Humanities Schools (142 schools named out of 482 public high schools in Georgia)

Chapel Hill and Alexander High Schools were named AP Humanities Schools for having students who tested in the following AP courses: at least one English course, two history/social science courses, one fine arts course, and one world language course.

2019 AP Access and Support Schools (64 schools named out of 482 public high schools in Georgia)

Chapel Hill and Douglas County High Schools earned recognition as AP Access and Support Schools, an honor given to schools with at least 30% of AP exams taken by students who identified themselves as African-American and/or Hispanic and 30% of all AP exams earning scores of 3 or higher.

2019 AP STEM Achievement School (128 schools named out of 482 public high schools in Georgia)

Douglas County High School was named an AP STEM Achievement School for having students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses and at least 40% of AP math and AP science exams earning scores of 3 or higher.

“We are proud that AP exam scores for students in the Douglas County School System have improved every year for the past five years,” said Pam Nail, Chief Academic Officer for the school system. “Our teachers and administrators are working hard to continue refining instruction and preparation. We hope to have additional schools recognized for their achievement next year.” AP exams are administered by the College Board, which also administers the SAT. AP courses are one of several ways Georgia students can access college-level learning at the high school level. Students who receive a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP exam may receive college credit.

The Georgia Department of Education began recognizing AP Honor Schools in 2008. Georgia’s public school class of 2018 is ranked 16th in the nation for the percentage of students scoring 3, 4, or 5 on at least one AP exam during high school, and 13th in the nation for AP participation.
