The Douglas County Chamber of Commerce is offering a hefty prize to a lucky local shopper for supporting local businesses.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA — Instead of hitting the big box stores for holiday shopping this year, Douglas County shoppers can strengthen the community by shopping local, all while building a chance to win a hefty prize from the county Chamber of Commerce.

The Douglas County Chamber of Commerce is sweetening the deal of shopping local this year. Small business support helps the local community in tons of ways, the Chamber said, like increasing the tax base and supporting local jobs.

The Chamber of Commerce wants locals to, well, shop local. They listed out ten benefits of doing so:

  1. It creates community identity.
  2. It increases community involvement.
  3. It improves community health.
  4. It benefits the environment.
  5. It increases the tax base.
  6. It impacts the local workforce.
  7. It enhances entrepreneurship.
  8. It inspires innovation.
  9. It requires less infrastructure and maintenance.
  10. It offers diverse products and services.

If that's not enough reason to shop local, this might be. You can win $1,000 by doing so. Here's how:

  • Between Nov. 30 and Dec. 15, shop at establishments which are Douglas County Chamber of Commerce Members or Villa Rica Main Street Members and spend at least $5. Save the receipt.
  • Before Monday, Dec. 16, turn in receipts to one of the locations listed below. They'll be open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Douglas County Chamber located at 6658 Church Street in Douglasville
    • Main Street Villa Rica Office located at 106 Temple Street in Villa Rica
    • (there's no limit to the number of receipts you can turn in)
  • At 4 p.m. on Dec. 17, the Chamber will host a live drawing on their Facebook page of all the receipts that were turned in.
    • The winner will get $1,000, and the participating business will get $300.
