I-20 Re-Opened After Dump Truck Hits Bridge (Update)

Douglas County authorities said all eastbound lanes and most westbound lanes were shut down Wednesday morning.

Update 10:15 a.m.: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said all lanes on Interstate 20 have been re-opened, but traffic congestion is still heavy in the area (S. Burnt Hickory Road and I-20).

Update 9:30 a.m.: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said the Georgia DOT is on the scene assessing the damage to the Burnt Hickory bridge.

Traffic is still in rough shape on I-20 and area surface streets. It may be 10 a.m. before the highway is re-opened.

A serious accident involving an overturned dump truck has closed much of Interstate 20 Wednesday morning, according to Douglas County authorities.

Douglasville Police said traffic was completely shut down on I-20 eastbound, and partially shut down on I-20 westbound due to the accident near S. Burnt Hickory Road.

The agency said the dump truck was traveling eastbound on the interstate when it hit the S. Burnt Hickory bridge and flipped over. The bridge also was shut down.

The accident happened before 7 a.m. Wednesday.
