Officers To Work Busy Lithia Springs Intersection At Peak Times

DOUGLASVILLE, GA -- Douglas County Board of Commission Chair, Dr. Romona Jackson Jones, met with Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds on Monday, March 18, to address complaints of a severe traffic backup during peak hours at an intersection in Lithia Springs.

Chairman Jones called for the meeting after receiving word that traffic was experiencing an inordinate amount of delay on Mt. Vernon Road as cars attempted to turn left onto Fairburn Road/Highway 92 during peak hours and concerns about school buses being able to navigate through the intersection due to the heavy traffic on Fairburn Road. As a result of the meeting which included Douglas County Administrator Mark Teal, Transportation Director Miguel Valentin and other crucial executive leaders of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Pounds is assigning two deputies to the intersection at the peak hours of the morning.

Deputies will begin to direct traffic Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 8:45 a.m.

As of Wednesday, March 20, motorists should expect to see two Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies directing traffic at the intersection of Mt. Vernon Road and Fairburn Road (Highway 92) to alleviate bottlenecks.

“I’m thankful to Sheriff Pounds for providing the necessary assistance to alleviate a difficult situation for motorists,” said Jones. “This is another example of collaboration and communication which is necessary for us to solve problems.”

Jones became aware of the issue after receiving a complaint March 14, and she began communicating with Sheriff Pounds to address opportunities.

Douglas County submitted a traffic signal study to the Georgia Department of Transportation for their review and approval of a traffic light at the intersection of Fairburn Road (Highway 92) and Mt. Vernon Road in 2018.

“It’s now up to the state to approve the request,” County Administrator Mark Teal said.
