DUNWOODY, GA -- A Dunwoody resident has announced plans to run for Georgia's 6th Congressional District.

Alexander Hernandez formally declared his candidacy Wednesday during a Save Medicare rally held outside Rep. Tom Price's Roswell office.

Hernandez, who said he's running as an Independent, said Republicans and Democrats have "ignored our biggest challenges because both parties are beholden to moneyed interest (sic)."

"I want to be beholden to the people," he said. "That's why I am choosing to run as an Independent."

The 6th Congressional District, which encompasses East Cobb, north Fulton and parts of DeKalb County, is currently represented by Tom Price.

On Wednesday, Price faced his first round of questioning from Senate members as part of President-elect Donald Trump's nomination of him to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.

Hernandez studied political science at Indiana University Northwest and later received a bachelor's degree in film.

Following school, he began his career as a property craftsperson in the film and television industry.

While working in the industry, he was elected to the IATSE Local 44 Executive Board as a property craft representative.

Hernandez lives in Dunwoody with wife, Adea DeCarlo, and their two dogs.

Hernandez noted he wants to represent people in Congress, bringing a fresh voice to the institution that works to keep the system of checks and balances working properly.

"Congress needs an independent voice that will stand for the Constitution and stand for Georgians, and life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," he said. "With your vote, I can be that independent voice for an independent people."
