Decatur Man Arrested for Shooting Death in Apartment Break-in: Reports
Charged with murder in East Atlanta Village incident, he has a long criminal record, say police.

ATLANTA, GA — The Atlanta police announced Wednesday that they have arrested a Decatur man for the shooting death of an East Atlanta Village resident during an Oct. 31 burglary, according to media reports.
A police fugitive unit arrested Jeffries Anderson, 36, on a murder charge in the death of Alex Newton, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Tips to Crime Stoppers helped lead to his arrest, the police said, and several people identified Anderson from a surveillance video posted on the Crime Stoppers website.

Newton, 30, walked in on an intruder when he stopped by his apartment for lunch on Oct. 31 at the Alexan EAV complex. They got into a fight, and then the burglar shot Newton and fled the scene, according to media reports.
The police said that Anderson has a long criminal record and may have committed other burglaries in the area, according to AJC.com. They said he also served 12 years in prison for manslaughter.

Newton's family members said Atlanta police told them Tuesday evening that a shooting suspect had been arrested, WSB-TV Channel 2 reported. The arrest came nearly two weeks after hundreds gathered at a vigil to remember Alex Newton.
