Parent group Atlanta Thrive protest at failing APS schools

More than 50 parents showed up this week in front of four failing APS schools in protest of the board's nonaction for their schools.

Four failing Atlanta Public Schools saw protests this week by Atlanta Thrive, a parent activist group advocating for equity in school quality across APS. A dozen or so parents gathered outside each of the schools, which are among the 13 of Georgia’s lowest performing schools in Atlanta, during arrival and dismissal hours.

Atlanta Thrive organized the families of the failing schools to protest in the days leading up to the March 2nd Atlanta School Board vote on its new strategic plan, which some say does not go far enough with intervention of failing schools. The protests took place at Douglass High, Carver High, Slater Elementary, and Thomasville Heights Elementary schools.

Atlanta Thrive is a parent-member and parent-driven organization that empowers families to disrupt inequities in the education system. Atlanta Thrive offers training and development to those who are passionate about all children receiving an excellent education and seeks to ensure that education is equitable across Atlanta Public Schools. The group is part of the Powerful Parent Network, which has members and affiliations across the U.S. who have been appearing at Democratic presidential candidate forums and rallies to speak out about the critical need for education equity in our school systems.
