Trump Tweets About Georgia's 6th District Race: 'Vote Now For Karen H'

On the eve of the biggest election so far this year, President Trump tweets support for Georgia Republican Karen Handel in 6th District.

EAST COBB, GA -- On the eve of the biggest election so far this year, President Donald Trump used his favorite medium to send a call to action to voters in Georgia. "Vote now for Karen H," Trump tweeted early Tuesday, showing that Georgia -- and its important 6th Congressional District race -- is on his mind.

Later in the day, he set his sites on Jon Ossoff, Handel's opponent in the 6th District. "Karen Handel's opponent in #GA06 can't even vote in the district he wants to represent," Trump tweeted Monday afternoon, "because he doesn't even life there! He wants to raise taxes and kill healthcare. On Tuesday, #VoteKarenHandel."

Ossoff, who lives in central DeKalb County, has played down the fact that he doesn't live in the 6th District. In April, he told CNN that he grew up there and still has family there. He said that he lives close to Emory University, where his girlfriend -- now his fiancee -- is going to medical school. Handel faces Democrat and first-time candidate Jon Ossoff, who has used anti-Trump sentiment to galvanize wide support from people in the district as well as outside of it.

The race comes amid a sensitive time for politicians. FBI agents and local police were at Handel's home last week investigating threats and a suspicious white powder found in a package mailed her and some of her neighbors.

For the past two months, voters in the 6th District -- the affluent north Atlanta suburbs encompassing parts of Cobb, Fulton and DeKalb counties -- have been deluged with TV, radio and internet ads portraying the candidates in one light or the other.

In a widely viewed debate two weeks ago, Handel and Ossoff squared off on primetime TV, with each taking shots at the other. But it was Handel who went viral with her quip: "I do not support a livable wage."

The race to replace former U.S. Rep. Tom Price, who vacated the seat to become the nation's health secretary, has benefited from an outpouring of cash from outside groups determined to sway the biggest election of 2017 thus far.

The race has also become a barometer of Trump's popularity on the local level. Democrats feel that if they can capitalize on voter discontent, they can take the district. The hashtag #Flipthe6th has become popular on social media.
