Beloved East Cobb Math Teacher Dies In Hospice Care

A memorial service is planned for Fred Veeder, a math instructor who was named Cobb County's top teacher while at Dodgen Middle School.

EAST COBB, GA — A popular math instructor at an East Cobb middle school, who was named top teacher in the district just three years ago, has died, according to published reports.

Fred Veeder taught at Dodgen Middle School and was named Cobb County School District Teacher of the Year in 2018. The Marietta Daily Journal reports that Veeder was in hospice care when he “died peacefully” on June 23. Veeder was 65.

A GoFundMe page set up before Veeder’s death by colleague Kari Viland, said Veeder had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and had already been hospitalized twice this year.

“Mr. Veeder, as he is known by his students and in the community, has shaped and impacted the lives of so many,” Viland wrote on the fund-raising page. “His Football Frenzy, March Madness, and Pi Day are just a few of the ways he has gone above and beyond showing his students learning can be enjoyable and engaging!”

A memorial service is planned for July 28 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in Marietta. Donations in Veeder’s memory can be made to the Atlanta Humane Society or "to the charity of your choice," according to Veeder's obituary.
