Chattahoochee Gator Caught; Moving to Florida

Only weeks after announcing the gator could stay, rangers instead have caught the reptile and are moving him.

COBB COUNTY, GA -- Only a few weeks after announcing a large alligator living off Cochran Shoals Trail could stay, rangers instead have captured the reptile and are in the process of moving him.

It's not clear when or why the Georgia Department of Natural Resources reversed its decision, but CBS46 is reporting that plans are to move the gator to south Florida.

Portions of the Chattahoochee River Recreation area had been temporarily closed to protect the reptile. Wildlife officials were worried about the gator's safety, and stressed the alligator hadn't harmed anyone.

"They were harassing the alligator and throwing things at it, so we closed that section of the trail to protect the alligator, quite frankly,” Park Ranger Jerry Hightower told Channel 2 Action News last month.

Worried about the gator's safety, park rangers, according to WTVM, put out several traps in an effort to relocate the gator to south Georgia or Florida. But then, the gator seemed to have retreated from some of the high-traffic areas.

The alligator is 6 to 8 feet long, and may have once been someone's pet.

So the Chattahoochee River Alligator is not a myth. I shot these today at the Chattahoochee NRA. Not very good pictures...
