Cobb County Carjacking Suspect Dead After Chase, Shootout

A Cobb County officer who was shot in the head has since been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

COBB COUNTY, GA — A carjacking that led to a police chase and shootout ended Thursday night with the suspect dead and an officer injured.

Martin Humberto Sanchez Fregoso, 37, of Smyrna, was shot dead by police after he fired at a Cobb County officer, striking him in the head.

The Atlanta-Journal-Constitution reported that the bullet did not penetrate the officer’s skull. The Cobb County officer has since been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Fregoso carjacked a Tesla from the parking lot of the Publix on Delk Road, according to Cobb County Police. When police located him, he took off, then stopped to fire a rifle at a patrol car.

Fregoso then ran into a townhome complex near Powers Ferry and Akers Mill roads, firing at officers again, according to the Atlanta newspaper.

After unsuccessfully trying to force his way into a townhome, Fregoso was confronted behind a dumpster and ordered to drop his weapon. Instead, he shot back, and police returned fire.

The GBI is investigating the shooting. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the GBI has investigated 51 officer-involved shootings so far this year.
