GA Coronavirus: More Than 3,600 New COVID-19 Cases, 16 Deaths

Georgia's coronavirus report on Monday showed a drop in new cases. Numbers after a weekend are typically lower because of lags in reporting.

ATLANTA, GA — Georgia reported more than 3,600 new cases of COVID-19 — 555 of them the slightly less reliable antigen-positive tests — in the state’s daily report on Monday. The state’s health department also reported 16 more deaths from COVID-19 over the last 24 hours.

Both numbers are lower than the records set over the last few days, but Monday numbers are typically lower because of lags in reporting over the weekend.

The Georgia Department of Public Health in Atlanta reported a total of 512,699 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at 2:50 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21. According to the health department’s website, that includes 3,121 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours. In addition, Georgia reported 555 new antigen-positive cases over the last 24 hours, which are considered to be probable cases of COVID-19.

Georgia has reported 9,453 deaths so far from COVID-19, with 16 more confirmed deaths recorded in the last 24 hours. Georgia also reported 946 probable deaths from COVID-19 since the pandemic began. These probable deaths include fatalities with indirect evidence of COVID-19.

Georgia reported 39,502 hospitalizations — 90 more than the day before — and 7,055

admissions so far to intensive-care units.

No information is available from Georgia about how many patients have recovered.

Counties in or near metro Atlanta and other metropolitan areas continue to have the highest number of COVID-19 positives, with Gwinnett County now in the lead and Fulton County very close behind it. These statistics do not include antigen-positive cases.

  10. Dougherty County: 200 deaths

Globally, more than 77.1 million people have tested positive for COVID-19, and nearly 1.7 million people have died from it, Johns Hopkins University reported Monday.

In the United States, nearly 18 million people have been infected and more than 318,000 people have died from COVID-19 as of Monday. The U.S. has only about 4 percent of the world's population but more confirmed cases and deaths than any other country.
