GA High School Football Pushed Back Two Weeks By COVID-19

Though the season is postponed until Sept. 4, the Georgia High School Association said it still plans a full 10-game schedule plus playoffs.

ATLANTA, GA — High school football season in Georgia will start two weeks later because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Georgia High School Association voted Monday to delay the start of football season until Sept. 4 due to a spike in COVID-19 cases, according to WXIA-TV.

However, high schools will still play a 10-game schedule and all playoff games. The GHSA said all other fall sports would start on time.

Even though a full schedule is planned, schools may choose to opt out. Many Georgia schools already plan to conduct classes online rather than in person.

According to WXIA-TV, the GHSA board of trustees voted 8-4 against keeping the current sports calendar, then voted unanimously to postpone football season from the week of Aug. 21 to Sept. 4.
