Gator Safety: Part of Chattahoochee Trail Closed
Wildlife officials want to keep people from harassing the alligator, who may have once been someone's pet.

So the Chattahoochee River Alligator is not a myth. I shot these today at the Chattahoochee NRA. Not very good pictures...

EAST COBB COUNTY, GA -- Portions of the Chattahoochee River Recreation area have been temporarily closed to protect a large alligator that's been spotted recently.
The alligator is 6 to 8 feet long, and may have once been someone's pet, reports WSB-TV. The gator was first spotted around the Cochran Shoals area near I-285 a few weeks ago, but park rangers say it's been in the area for about 10 years.
Wildlife officials are worried about the gator's safety, and stress the giant reptile hasn't done anything to harm a jogger or fisherman.
"They were harassing the alligator and throwing things at it, so we closed that section of the trail to protect the alligator, quite frankly,” Park Ranger Jerry Hightower told Channel 2 Action News.
There is no word yet on if rangers plan to move the alligator to another location.
