Hurricane Zeta Forces Cobb To Cancel Thursday In-Person Classes

Cobb County classes will go all-online Thursday after the district canceled in-person learning because of the threat posed by Hurricane Zeta

COBB COUNTY, GA — All in-person classes scheduled for Thursday in the Cobb County School District have been canceled because of anticipated severe weather spawned by Hurricane Zeta.

“This decision was made in keeping with our commitment to student and staff safety, with particular concern for our youngest bus riders,” according to a statement posted to the district’s website Wednesday afternoon.

Citing “severe weather conditions caused by Hurricane Zeta,” the statement asked students to report to class remotely through the Cobb Teaching and Learning System unless “you, your family or your home are impacted by Hurricane Zeta.”

Local school and central office staff will work remotely, according to the statement, while essential employees will receive specific instructions from their respective executive-cabinet members.

Elementary after-school programs are canceled but extracurricular activites will continue as scheduled. Parents with school-specific questions are asked to contact their local schools.

The cancelation follows a tropical storm warning issued Wednesday by the National Weather Service for the metro Atlanta area and much of north Georgia. Heavy rain and strong winds gusting up to 55 mph are expected.

Cobb County is one of four metro-Atlanta districts so far to announce all-virtual classes Thursday. Forsyth, Gwinnett and Douglas counties also have canceled in-person classes for Thursday.
