In Loving Memory of Betty B. Scarr, 90

Obituary and service information from Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta.

Betty B. Scarr, 90, of Marietta, died Saturday, August 29, 2015.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 3, at the First Presbyterian Church, Marietta, with Reverend Denise Beltzer officiating.

Mrs. Scarr (“Ms. Betty”) graduated from high school in New Jersey; then met “Jimmy” on the roller rinks; got married in 1945 and after World War II, moved to Marietta, GA to open the Marietta Hatchery and Seed Store located at 205 Church Street. In 1960, Ms. Betty began a 26 year career working for Dr. Peter Inglis as his office manager and nurse. She learned to give shots, take temperatures and read vital signs for many of Pete’s patients. More importantly, she developed life-long friendships with many patients for years to come.
Many people in life have 2nd homes. Ms. Betty had her second home too – the people and the buildings of First Presbyterian Church Marietta. Aside from her primary residence, First Presbyterian was her favorite place to be. She loved the people here; she cared how the church looked to visitors. She took joy in polishing the silver and laundering table linens. She eagerly awaited Wednesdays to come and serve midweek dinners. Hearing the laughter of children at Club 3:30 made her smile. A crack in the ceiling here bothered her as much as if it were at 1630 Park Lane. She was the kind of church member any Congregate or Minister would want to have. She consistently prayed for her church and for its members. No job was too small and no member was unimportant in the work of the Church. She taught the youth for many years; encouraged new mothers; and provided meals to grieving families. She practiced her faith daily with various acts of kindness and done quietly never wanting to draw attention to herself. Ms. Betty was the body of Christ in action.
The church pictorial directory was one of her favorite books. It was always near her. She would look through it and recall attributes about various members. She would point out an individual and talk about the person’s family. There was a story for almost every face in the book... In particular, she enjoyed the changing photos of students she taught in Ventures as they grew up and had children of their own. She cherished that directory as much as any of her family albums.
